Picking a company to build your app is one of the biggest decisions you will make for your product. The wrong choice costs months and money. The right one becomes a long-term partner. This checklist covers what to ask and what to check, so you can compare companies on facts rather than on a polished sales pitch.

Start with the problem, not the technology

Before you talk to anyone, write down in plain language who will use the app, what problem it solves for them, and how you will know it is working. A good development company will ask about these things first. If a company starts by talking about frameworks and programming languages before they understand your users, that tells you where their attention is.

Look for shipped products, not slides

A portfolio page is a starting point, not proof. Ask to see products that are live today, and ask who uses them. Better still, open the app or website yourself and try it. Does it load quickly? Does it work on a phone? Does it feel finished?

  • Ask for two or three clients you can speak to directly.
  • Check whether the work is similar in size and difficulty to yours.
  • Look for long-running relationships, such as a client who returned for a second project.

Ask who will actually build it

Many companies send senior people to the sales meeting and hand the work to someone else. Ask who the designer, the developers and the project manager will be, and whether you can meet them before you sign. A small, stable team that stays on your project from start to finish usually delivers better than a large team that keeps changing.

Understand how they handle requirements and change

Requirements always change once real people start using a prototype. What matters is how the company deals with it.

  • Do they work in short cycles and show you working software every week or two?
  • How do they record and price a change request?
  • Will you have one point of contact who answers your questions quickly?

Be clear about ownership and handover

Ask these questions before you sign anything: who owns the source code, who holds the app store and cloud accounts, and what documentation you will receive at the end. A good partner makes it easy for you to take the project elsewhere, because they expect to earn your business again by doing good work.

Ask what happens after launch

Launch day is the start of the work, not the end. Apps need security updates, fixes, new phone operating system versions and, if they succeed, new features. Ask what support is included, how quickly they respond to a serious problem, and what ongoing support costs.

Compare quotes properly

When you collect quotes, make sure they cover the same scope. Ask each company to list what is included: design, testing, hosting setup, app store submission, training and support. The cheapest quote often leaves things out that you will pay for later. Ask for a breakdown by phase rather than one total.

Red flags to watch for

  • A price given in the first meeting, before anyone has asked about your users.
  • No live products you can open and try.
  • Refusing to let you speak to past clients.
  • Vague answers about who will do the work.
  • Pressure to sign quickly.
  • Unwillingness to put code ownership in the contract.

A one-page checklist

  1. I can describe my users and their problem in two sentences.
  2. I have opened at least two live products the company built.
  3. I have spoken to at least one past client.
  4. I know who will design and build my app.
  5. The quote lists what is included, by phase.
  6. Code and account ownership are written into the contract.
  7. I know what support costs after launch.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a Kerala-based company or one from overseas?

Either can work. A local partner makes it easy to meet in person, share a time zone and visit the team, which helps most in the early weeks when requirements are still changing. What matters more than location is the track record: ask for products that are live and used by real people.

Is a fixed-price or an hourly contract better?

A fixed price suits a clearly defined scope. If the scope will change as you learn, a phased contract, with a fixed price for each phase, usually protects both sides better than one price for everything.

Who should own the source code?

You should, once you have paid for the work. Agree this in writing before the project starts, along with access to the code repository and the hosting accounts.
